Bicarbonate Dialysate Mixing Systems

By Paula Dutka posted 03-18-2014 14:52

We are considering initiating utilization of a Bicarbonate Dialysate Mixing and Dispensing System. Some of the Regulatory Requirements in regard to system Disinfection are vague, and we would like to get input as to how often facilities are disinfecting these types of systems - daily vs. weekly etc. Thank you for your input.

Paula,
You didn't mention if you were in a State that has licensure rules for Dialysis or not, but CMS regulations would require that you "follow manufacturer's recommendations" for disinfection and operation of the equipment. AAMI standards would require that culture of the system be taken and tracked (usually on a monthly basis) to prove that the system is sanitary for patient safety. If your State has licensure rules there may be more regulations that are more strick than CMS You should follow the more strick regulation when in doubt. Be sure that you have policies and procedures in place for the new equipment and that staff are trained and skills are checked before they operate the equipment (or disinfect it) without supervision. Hope this helps!

A central delivery system is rinsed daily with RO water after a citric acid/vinegar rinse, then weekly disinfection with bleach
