Skin allergy to chloraprep

By Pamela Secor posted 04-16-2012 15:47

Was wondering what everyone was doing if the patient develops a skin allergy to chlorprep for catheter dressings and AVF/AVG site cleaning?  What type of dressing do you use?  Do you reintroduce the chloraprep when the skin reacation resolve?   If you use a gauze dressing do you cover it with bioclusive?
Thanks

We are just reviewing our policy regarding this. What we have decided is to use the chloroprep for cleanse the skin and then use the tegaderm CGH dressiing rather than the Biopatch and Bioclusive dressing. If sensitive to chloroprep, we switch to alcohol prep followed by betadine scrub and dress with Opsite Only and change dressing weekly as for tegaderm. If there is drainage of some kind, we dress with 2x2's and bioclusive dressing. If sensitive to the bioclusive dressing, then we go to gauze and paper tape. Hope this helps.
