Blood supply to bone is interrupted, leading to cell death, collapse of bone structures, bone destruction, pain and loss of joint function. Commonly involves the epiphysis of long bones, e.g. femoral and humeral heads and femoral condyles. Associated with corticosteroids and has diminished with the reduced use of steroids for immunosuppression.
