Nucleated cells shed B2 microglobulin into the serum. A nonspecific marker, 90 percent is eliminated by glomerular filtration. Transplant:  Allograft rejection is associated with elevated levels of B2 microglobulin. Renal diseases: Renal failure leads to the accumulation of B2 microglobulin and its production might actually increase with uremia. B2 microglobulin may be deposited in joint spaces and lead to synovitis, referred to as dialysis related or associated amyloidosis.
