Caregiver Burden

Final

Informal caregivers (e.g. unpaid family members, friends) caring for someone receiving renal/kidney replacement therapy such as hemodialysis can be very stressful and can negatively affect the caregiver's health. It can be defined as the extent to which caregivers perceive that their caregiving has had an adverse effect on their emotional, physical, and spiritual functioning.  The role of caregiver can be stressful but also rewarding so it is important to identify caregiver burden and intervene early if possible.
