Medical Nutritional Therapy (MNT) is a medical nutritional educational and counseling Medicare benefit for individuals with CKD stage 3-4 who are not receiving dialysis. This reimbursable Medicare benefit can be provided by a registered dietician. This type of medical nutritional education and counseling has been shown to help delay progression of end stage renal disease (ESRD) and decrease first-year mortality after initiation of hemodialysis (Beto, Ramirez, & Bansal, 2014).
