How many of you are using Buttonholes?  Are you having any problems with infections?

We have used buttonholes for quite awhile and the only time we saw a spike in infections was when we used the scab pickers that came with the buttonhole needles, I don't know the technical names for them(I can find out if needed). We found that it was harder to get all of the scab removed and theorized that was the cause of our increased infections and so went back to using tweezers.

We have some of our patients that have buttonholes and have zero infections.

43% of our 240pts have fistulas and of those all but 3-4 pts do NOT use buttonholes. We have had only 3 septic events from infected fistulas in the past 14months. We now are using the Manugel to aid in scab removal and just looking at our infection rate since we started that there has been an improvement. (That is just a judgement call.)
